Which RIB to choose? A step-by-step guide

Which RIB to choose? A step-by-step guide

Choosing a RIB is simpler than it seems if you answer a few questions in the right order. Here is our step-by-step guide.

Step 1. What is it for?

Step 2. How many people?

The maximum number of people is given in the specifications, but there may be fewer comfortable seats. First decide how many people you will usually take, then check the deck layout. GRAND RIBs carry from 3 (S275) to 8 people (S470).

Step 3. Size

Length Best for People
2.75–3.3 m tender, small lake, no licence 3–4
3.7–4.2 m family, large lakes, bays 5–6
4.7–5 m larger crew, towing 8–9

Step 4. Open, Sport or Deluxe?

The Open version has a free deck and tiller steering — the most room for gear, rods and tanks. Sport adds a steering console, and Deluxe also comfortable seats with a backrest. The hull and tube are the same in every version.

Step 5. PVC or Hypalon?

In the Polish climate good PVC is entirely sufficient and cheaper. Hypalon lasts longer under heavy use and in warm countries. Details in the guide Hypalon or PVC.

Step 6. Outboard and licence

With an outboard up to 10 kW (9.9 HP) you can boat in Poland without a licence. We usually recommend about 80% of the model’s maximum power. More: Which outboard for a RIB and Motorboat licence.

Step 7. Transport and storage

A RIB up to about 4.9 m fits on a light single-axle trailer, which can usually be towed on a category B driving licence. More in the guide A trailer for a RIB.

Step 8. Budget

GRAND RIBs cost from 12 400 zł, and with an outboard from 16 500 zł. A family RIB for 6–8 people with an outboard is usually 40,000–70,000 zł. Full price overview: How much does a RIB cost; packages with an outboard: Inflatable boat with engine.

Frequently asked questions

Inflatable boat or RIB?

A RIB has a rigid V-shaped bottom: it holds its course better, gets on the plane faster and is safer in waves. An inflatable with a soft floor is lighter and easier to stow.

Which RIB for 4 people?

A 3.3–3.7 m RIB, for example the S330 or S370 N.

Which RIB without a licence?
